Seasonal Allergy Management

Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever or seasonal allergic rhinitis, occur when the immune system overreacts to airborne allergens such as pollen, grass, ragweed, or mold spores.

When allergens enter the body, they trigger histamine release, leading to inflammation of the nasal passages, eyes, and throat. Symptoms can vary by season:Spring – Tree pollenSummer – Grass pollenFall – RagweedCommon

Symptoms:

  • Frequent sneezing, often in rapid bursts, especially after outdoor exposure.

  • Nasal congestion and clear, watery runny nose (not thick mucus)Itchy, watery, or red eyes, often worse during high pollen counts or windy days.

  • Scratchy throat and postnasal drip, sometimes causing a persistent cough.

  • Facial pressure or mild headaches due to sinus inflammation.

  • Fatigue and poor sleep caused by nasal blockage and nighttime discomfort.

Unlike a cold, seasonal allergies do not cause fever and will persist as long as allergen exposure continues. Monitoring local pollen counts and reducing outdoor activities during peak times can help manage symptoms.

Oral Allergy Medications – Antihistamines such as loratadine, cetirizine, or fexofenadine reduce sneezing, runny nose, and itching without causing much drowsiness. Some options combine antihistamines with decongestants for faster nasal relief.
