Sleep Disturbance Management

Sleep problems can appear as difficulty falling asleep, waking often during the night, restless sleep, or feeling unrefreshed in the morning. Daytime effects may include fatigue, trouble concentrating, mood changes, and slowed reaction times. Some people experience insomnia, while others have excessive daytime sleepiness (somnolence).

Non-Medicated Approaches

  • Insomnia: Establish a consistent bedtime, avoid screens before sleep, keep the bedroom cool and dark, and limit caffeine after midday.

  • Daytime drowsiness: Increase morning light exposure, maintain regular wake-up times, and take brief activity breaks during the day.

Over-the-Counter Support

  • Occasional sleeplessness: Melatonin supplements may help regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

  • Short-term sleep aid: Diphenhydramine or doxylamine-based products can promote drowsiness but should not be used long-term.

  • Daytime alertness: Caffeine tablets or beverages can improve focus, but avoid late-day use to prevent nighttime disruption.

Seek medical evaluation if sleep disturbances last more than 2–3 weeks, interfere with daily life, or are accompanied by loud snoring, gasping, or sudden awakenings.
